Portraits - Second Try

Below are two photos that I took of my mom. I used outdoor light coming in from her sliding class window. I chose this spot because it provided the best, even light out of any of the spots in her home. I wasn't sure if I should crop the photo and remove the sliding door to the left, of if it would tell more of a 'story' about where she is.

  1. The top one is stronger from an expression point of view...

Try moving more to the left, putting your left shoulder against the sliding glass door or wall it is on. Hold the camera vertically and compose just your mom in the frame. Allow her to relax and not be on the spot or embarrassed by the moment... you can wait that out.

This is all harder than it first seems, yet is one of the essential skills for any portrait photographer... that's why I call this assignment "how to fry and egg".
